what is assistive technology?

Assistive technology (AT) is any device, software, or equipment that helps people work around their challenges.

Done right, it enables these users to perform difficult functions that might otherwise be impossible. While mobility devices might come to mind, there are also off-the-shelf consumer products that make a huge difference such as voice assistants and compatible smart devices.

The Tyler Schrenk Foundation has purchased and setup individuals with these technologies in order to control a television by voice, open and close doors by voice, turn lights on and off by voice, control room temperature by voice, and much more. We also offer targeted instructional content for those unfamiliar with the technology.

HOW WE HELP

The world of assistive technologies (AT) can be overwhelming and unfamiliar. We help people in need navigate this world by:

  • Hosting 1:1 consultations for people who could benefit from assistive technologies.

  • Providing grants for those unable to afford these life changing technologies.

  • Collaborating on projects in the assistive technology field.

The Tyler Schrenk Foundation is a Washington based 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation dedicated to improving lives through the promotion and distribution of assistive technologies (AT). In addition to this work, TSF also consults for hospitals, school districts, and companies globally.

We are needed

There is an immense need for assistive technologies. The Christopher Reeve Foundation estimates there are approximately 5.4 million people living with paralysis in the United States (Christopher Reeves Foundation 2013). While not all of these people are paralyzed from the neck down and are in the greatest need, there is no shortage of people who could use our help.

According to the The World Health Organization:

Assistive technology enables people to live healthy, productive, independent, and dignified lives… to participate in education, the labor market, in civic life. Without assistive technology, people are often excluded, isolated, and locked into poverty… Today, only 1 in 10 people in need have access to assistive products.

The Tyler Schrenk Foundation is dedicated to closing this immense gap by focusing not only people who reach out, but by actively searching for those that could use our assistance.

HOW WE CAN HELP YOU

The Tyler Schrenk Foundation provides two grants: The Jose Blakely Memorial Grant and the Demonstrating Independence Program Grant.

TSF also offers consultations at request. If you’re seeking more information on assistive technology, or guidance on setup and use, you can schedule a consultation.
