CONTROLLING A COMPUTER INDEPENDENTLY

We are going to highlight four different modes of controlling a computer. There are more and this changes very quickly but these are the most common. There is no wrong way to go here, it is completely user preference.

  1. Mouthstick (Direct mouse access).

  2. Voice Control.

  3. Eye Gaze.

MOUTH STICK
DIRECT MOUSE CONTROL

This option consists of a device often called them mouse stick or mouse wand. This allows the user to control the mouse on the computer by moving a directional control as well as a sip-puff action to right and left click.

Due to this being a very popular way to go we have dedicated a entire page to the different options. To learn more please click below.

QUADSTICK

The QuadStick is a mouth operated joystick that allows quadriplegics and other individuals with upper limb impairments the ability to control video games. It also can be used as a way to control a computer much like a mouse.

The Quadstick is described on its website as a game controller for quadriplegics but it can do much more. It allows anybody with mobility impairments the ability to control their gaming console or their computer.

Gaming:

  • The QuadStick can work directly with a PS3, PS4 or Nintendo Switch game console, or directly with Windows or Mac personal computers, and most Android devices. The QuadStick functions as a Game Controller, Mouse, Keyboard and Flash drive. Custom configuration files can be loaded into the Quadstick with a PC or Mac.

  • The QuadStick can also be used with the XBox One/360 consoles with the help of the CronusMax, or Brooks PS3/PS4 Super Converter crossover gaming device. Or an Xbox adaptive controller.

Computer controls:

  • The Quadstick can operate as a “mouth mouse” allowing an individual to access their computer much like they would a regular computer mouse. By moving the main directional unit on the Quadstick the cursor on the screen can be moved around and then by sipping or puffing into the device a left click and right-click can be executed.

QUADJOY

The QuadJoy is used to control a mouse on your computer by controlling a joystick with your mouth. You are able to move the mouse in any direction and perform a right and left click. This product is reliable and I find to be one of the better options to help control a computer.

VOICE CONTROL

There are several different dictation software’s that will allow to you control your computer. We have dedicated a page to go over the several options. To learn more please click below.

DRAGON NATURALLYSPEAKING

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is voice driven program that let you control your computer completely by voice. I find it to be the best speech to text voice software available. It also can act as a way to control your computer by voice with a wide ranging amount controls to move a mouse navigate the web. I do not have as much experience using Dragon to navigate your computer I only use it for speech to text conversion but no of many people who have mastered the program and can easily use it as act alone way to controlling your computer.

WINDOWS VOICEACCESS

Requires Windows 11 (any PC). Free.

EYE GAZE

Eye gaze is commonly use by individuals with ALS but he can also be used by anyone with mobility issues. This is especially effective when a mouth stick may take up too much space or voice control may not work in a loud environment.

more and more companies are providing this type of technology but it is rather new. I would recommend the Tobii I tracking hardware with the Microsoft software for anyone who is interested. We will also list other options.

Tobii Eye Tracker 4C

The Game-changing Eye Tracking Peripheral for Streaming and PC Gaming. Uses Windows operating system.
